Analysis of a functional material under relevant conditions to which it is exposed during operation is becoming increasingly important for rational material development. The structure of a functional material under operating conditions does not necessarily correspond to that prior to, or after its use. A number of analytical methods are at hand to explore such structure. Given the rapid developments in synchrotron research, X-ray based methods are especially important for these studies. Often, these methods are combined in a single measurement with conventional (optical) techniques to obtain multiple-scale, correlated information on the state of the bulk and of the surface of the material under controlled conditions. more
