As earlier announced the next European Microscopy Congress, EMC 2012, will be organized by the Royal Microscopical Society (RMS) in cooperation with the Electron Microscopy and Analysis Group (EMAG). The original plan was to use the ExCeL convention centre in London, the same venue as used for the biannual Microscience trade show and conference series. In late September of 2012, however, it became clear that the arrangements with the ExCeL site could not be finalized due to a possible overlap with reservations made by the Olympic organization running into the EMC exhibition set-up period. The local organizers thus decided to look for possible alternative sites to host EMC in London or elsewhere in the UK. After a detailed search, an excellent opportunity emerged in the form of the award-winning Manchester Central Convention Complex, based on the remodeled Victorian central train station in the heart of the city of Manchester. After a visit from a delegation of the RMS and European Microscopy Society (EMS) Boards, including representatives of the trade, it was evident that this Centre offered everything necessary for a microscopy congress, including ample space for exhibition, posters, plenary lectures and parallel sessions and all within a convenient central location. Since a choice had to be made with some urgency it was decided to change the location of EMC 2012 to this new venue in Manchester. The meeting dates remain the same, 16 - 21 September 2012.
