In collaboration with Kurt Anderson at the Beatson Institute, Glasgow, Cairn Reserach has developed an illumination system for launching up to three different TIRF wavelengths simultaneously with widefield fluorescence. The neat twist to Kurt's design was to introduce the laser lines via right-angled fibres thus leaving the optical path unoccluded for widefield fluorescence. Having agreed to design and build the TIRF epi-illuminator Cairn Research realised that there were no laser launches available on the market that did exactly what they needed. Cairn Research therefore also developed the flexible LaserBank which will launch up to five laser lines into up to five different single-mode fibres, or allow arbitrary combinations of lines into fewer fibres. The LaserBank allows for flexible analogue intensity control and digital switching of a wide range of lasers, either directly, or using an Acousto Optical Tunable Filter.
