Witec introduced a line extension of the alpha300 microscope series. Building on the system's inherent modularity, the company has added several new microscope versions in order to meet all the diverse and multi-faceted customer requirements one may encounter. In the field of Raman Microscopy the new baseline is the micro Raman system alpha300 M for single point spectrum acquisitions and depth profiling. The alpha300 M+ is additionally equipped with a stepper motor and allows Raman mapping experiments and large area investigations.

Bruker Nano announced that its N8 Titanos large-sample inspection AFM has been further improved to provide high spatial resolving power. Due to its AFM technology and mechanical stability, the AFM has now been demonstrated with atomic-scale resolution on HOPG (highly oriented pyrolythic graphite) on a production instrument in standard configuration. The AFM has proven itself once again as the most precise and stable AFM platform for large samples up to 300 mm diameter.

We report for the first time the use of Atomic Force Microscopy (AFM) in discriminating between living normal human urothelial cells (HUC) and bladder tumour cells (MGH) on the basis of their ultrastructure and nanomechanical properties. AFM imaging revealed clear differences in the shapes and dimensions of MGH and HUC cells: MGH cells had the tendency to cluster and therefore they did not spread much compared to their normal counterparts. As a consequence, the dimensions of MGH cells were found to be smaller than those of normal HUCs.

Ztherm combines powerful conventional and new advanced thermal analysis capabilities with the high resolution of AFM. Allthough it adds patent pending compensation for thermally-induced cantilever bending and measurement of contact stiffness and dissipation for the highest sensitivity and resolution available. The Option provides highly localized heating with sensitivity to ≤10-22 liter (sub-zeptoliter) materials property changes, more than an order of magnitude improvement in volume over that previously available with commercial systems.
