For the three „global killer diseases", HIV/ AIDS, TB and Malaria, fast and reliable diagnosis is crucial for modern laboratory practices. In resource-limited settings, for example, TB is diagnosed by using sputum smears with microscopy for which fluorescence based microscopic techniques have shown to be much more sensitive than transmitted light microscopy, where M. tuberculosis bacilli in a significant number of cases are not seen.

BD Biosciences: BD CARV II Confocal Imager. The BD CARV II Confocal Imager from BD Biosciences delivers high resolution CCD confocal imaging in an easy to use and cost effective optical package that can be attached to new or existing microscopes. High-speed multi-pinhole confocal scanning, combined with high quantum efficiency CCD cameras, allows recording of images at up to 100 frames per second. Instead of lasers, the confocal imager uses a long life arc source which allows for full-spectrum (360 nm – 700 nm) confocal imaging.
