Chitin

In this article we present a universal method for structural investigation of chitin by using correlative AFM-TEM microscopy. The advantage of this method is that polysaccharide chains, proteins, and biominerals can be analyzed simultaneously by AFM (protein-chitin fibril distribution) and analytical TEM (chemical composition of the same particular area).

Formation of α-Manganese Dioxide Nanotubes

Hydrothermal decomposition of KMnO4 in the acidic environment in the presence of Fe3+(aq) ions leads to the formation of α-MnO2 nanotubes. The morphology evolution from the sponge-like spheres to the nanotubes as a function of reaction time was imaged by FE-SEM and TEM. The presence of iron in nanotubes was unambiguously confirmed by STEM-EELS measurement across the nanotube diameter.

HAADF and EELS Study of ULK Dielectrics

The ITRS requires the integration of dielectric materials with effective dielectric constant (k) lower than 2.8. This is achieved using porous SiOCH. Unfortunately during integration in the devices, damages are introduced in the low-k layer by CMP. The impact of these damages on the microstructure and the electronic properties are studied using HAADF imaging and Valence Electron Energy Loss Spectroscopy in TEM environment. Results are compared to low-k capped with an etch stop layer.

Aberration Corrected STEM and EELS: Atomic Scale Chemical Mapping

Aberration Corrected STEM and EELS: Atomic Scale Chemical Mapping - The ultimate aim of an analytical technique applied to a solid material could be stated as the identification and mapping of the constituent atoms and their bonding in three dimensions. Hitherto, this was almost always achieved by diffraction methods averaging over many identical structures and, where it can be used, this remains the most powerful approach. more

Electron Energy Loss Spectroscopy

The combination of high resolution imaging with energy loss spectroscopy allows to resolve questions about the morphology, structure, composition and electronic structure of a material in a single instrument. By the assistance of band structure calculations and simulated EELS spectra, the experimental data can be analyzed in detail. Following this approach it is possible to study the relation between the geometric and electronic structure of materials at the nanometer scale.
