Atomic Resolution

Bruker Nano announced that its N8 Titanos large-sample inspection AFM has been further improved to provide high spatial resolving power. Due to its AFM technology and mechanical stability, the AFM has now been demonstrated with atomic-scale resolution on HOPG (highly oriented pyrolythic graphite) on a production instrument in standard configuration. The AFM has proven itself once again as the most precise and stable AFM platform for large samples up to 300 mm diameter. more

N-STORM Microscopes will Enhance Resolution 10-fold

Nikon Instruments has announced that Nikon Corporation has signed a licensing agreement with Harvard University granting the company its rights to use the Stochastic Optical Reconstruction Microscopy (STORM) technology. Under the terms of the agreement, Nikon will manufacture this technology enabled microscopy systems, designed to realize resolution higher than ever before achieved by conventional optical microscopes, and market them with the N-STORM name. more

Kinesin-1 is a molecular motor essential for cellular function. It transports components such as membrane-bound organelles and molecular complexes around a cell by travelling along microtubule filaments, which make up part of the cytoskeleton, while hydrolysing ATP. This motion is processive, in one direction only and is known to involve both of kinesin's two heads. Although extensively studied by a variety of techniques over many years, the mechanism these single-molecule motors use for this efficient motion on the nanoscale is not fully understood. more
