With a new near-field scanning microwave microscope (NSMM) researchers from the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) will improve the ability to determine the composition and physics of nanoscale materials and devices dramatically.
Few techniques can make measurements of equivalent resolution for such a wide range of samples, including semiconductors, semiconducting nanowire, materials for photovoltaic applications, magnetic materials, multiferroic materials, and even proteins and DNA.

Scanning near-field optical microscopy (SNOM) and spectroscopy allow sub-wavelength spatial resolution for gathering a diversity of information typical for optical spectroscopy, e.g. Raman, infrared absorption, and dielectric dispersion. Applications range from fundamental and bio-medical science over material characterization to investigations of fully-functional devices, all on the nanometer length scale.

Witec introduced a line extension of the alpha300 microscope series. Building on the system's inherent modularity, the company has added several new microscope versions in order to meet all the diverse and multi-faceted customer requirements one may encounter. In the field of Raman Microscopy the new baseline is the micro Raman system alpha300 M for single point spectrum acquisitions and depth profiling. The alpha300 M+ is additionally equipped with a stepper motor and allows Raman mapping experiments and large area investigations.
