Dispersion forces play a key role in attracting atoms to molecules. They not only influence the formation of structures in materials, they also affect friction in micromechanical systems, such as those often used in acceleration and rotation sensors found in cars and smartphones. The effects of dispersion forces can also be seen in the macroscopic world - for instance, when they help spiders and geckos to walk across ceilings in defiance of gravity.
