Decoration of grain boundaries in polycrystalline rocks has long been of importance in structural geology. This is because the recrystallized grain size in monomineralic rock is a good indicator of  paleostress conditions.

Understanding the mechanical properties of rock salt and its deformation behavior is key to predicting the  long-term stability of nuclear waste repositories and contributes to our understanding of the dynamics of salt-related sedimentary basins which host the majority of oil and gas accumulations on earth.
